Only a few decades ago the situation was the opposite. To enumerate the reasons why this has happened would be long, tedious and, above all, repetitive. So in deciding to devote an entire issue of the magazine to the theme of “Italian singularities”, the editors of «Casabella» 967 set themselves simple rules without conceding much to clichés: they decided to document with ease the work of a number of small professional studios, also fiscally resident in Italy, active in trying to revive a cultural debate that is in many ways stagnant, not infrequently engaged in attempting to reawaken the university from the comatose state in which it finds itself, and, last but not least, never before landing in the pages of «Casabella». Once the brief profiles of the BDR bureau, Demogo, Enrico Dusi Studio, ErranteArchitetture, OASI architects and Piovenefabi studios had been prepared for publication in «Casabella» 967, it was deemed appropriate to do so in a slightly different way than usual. The result is a graphic design that aims to make evident the diversity of tones, attitudes, ways of working and expressive choices that characterise the professional experiences of the protagonists of «Casabella» 967, with whom the magazine would like to share the conviction that the time has come to escape the cone of shadow mentioned above.

The January-February 2025 issue 965-966 of «Casabella» arrives on newsstands late: we apologise to our readers and subscribers. The inconvenience we know we have caused them, is justified by the commitment required to edit this double issue, consisting of 144 pages. A long essay by Francesco Dal Co examines the singular history of the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, from its establishment in 1956 to the present day. Its activities have led to the construction of a unique architectural complex that includes the Foundation's headquarters, the Museum, the park and the Centre of Modern Art (CAM). The headquarters and the museum were designed by three outstanding Portuguese architects, Ruy d'Athouguia, Pedro Cid and Alberto Pessoa, the park by Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and António Barreto, and the CAM by one of the best-known British architects of the second half of the 20th century, Leslie Martin.

In 2024, a profound reform of the CAM was completed based on a project by Kengo Kuma, the winner of a competition in which Aires Mateus, Barbas Lopes, Tatiana Bilbao, Christ & Gantenbein, Pedro Domingos, Junya Ishigami, Carla Juaçaba, Inês Lobo, Menos é Mais, John Pawson, and SAMI participated. In addition to Kuma's work, all their projects are reproduced on the pages of «Casabella» 965-966, which compared them with two emblematic recent transformations of famous Brazilian museums, the MASP (Lina Bo Bardi) and the Pinacoteca do Estado (Paulo Mendes da Rocha) in São Paulo. These two works were designed by Metro Arquitetos and Arquitetos Associados, and Daniele Pisani presents them in «Casabella» 965-966, one of the aims of which is to offer readers the opportunity to reflect on the current fate of some famous museums of the 20th century.[-]

Famous for his refined and occasionally biting wit, which permeates both his works and his personality, James Stirling also amused himself by playing with festivities, to the point of altering his own date of birth, which was 22nd April 1924, not 1926 as many publications continue to indicate today. The reason for this deception is not known; it was probably just light-hearted jest, though perhaps it was not totally free of advantages. This issue of «Casabella» offers an overview of Stirling's oeuvre, compiled in conjunction with the centenary of his birth, starting from documents that have broadly contributed to earn him acclaim as one of the leading protagonists of contemporary architecture, and from new materials, some of which have never been published before. The materials come from private and public collections: in particular, from the London-based archives of Mark Girouard, the studio Stirling, Wilford & Associates and Drawing Matter, from the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, and the Archivio Progetti of the IUAV University of Venice. The issue is organised in four sections. The first one traces a timeline across the most outstanding moments of Stirling's career, from his training to his travels, from the various locations of his studio to the main exhibitions and publications regarding his work, all the way to the projects implemented and those that remained on the drawing board. This “map” forms a critical profile on his figure as an architect, guiding readers through his unusual personal and professional life. The second section analyses two central aspects that can help us to understand Stirling's remarkable success: the working method which he shared, over the years, with James Gowan, Michael Wilford, as well as the Associates and the many staffers in his firm; and the use of drawing, a tool for thinking, an integral, original factor that constituted a true cultural project. The third chapter brings together twelve works of architecture and interprets the concepts of the “series” and “one offs” which Stirling assigned to his works. The magazine comes to a close with the reproduction of a letter, and the text of a lecture, belonging to two very different moments in Stirling's life, and finally an anthology of writings focusing on his oeuvre. Looking back on Stirling enables us to shed light on the timeliness of his work and the importance of his intellectual legacy. This is a heritage that is hard to grasp, but one that resonates even more in the present cliché-ridden vacuum, when architecture seems to be engaged in narcissistic self-reflection whilst ignoring Stirlingʼs legacy.

Heritage is the title that summarizes the topics addressed by «Casabella» 963. This word recurs more and more frequently in private conversations and often plays a discriminating role in political and cultural debate. For architects, it is a theme they are increasingly called upon to deal with, despite the differences in the environments and circumstances in which they practice their profession. «Casabella» 963 aims to document the variety of ways in which this theme is interpreted by architects in the most diverse regions of the world, bringing to the readers' attention works built, with very different purposes, in Brazil (Hereñu+Ferroni arquitectos), in Spain (Pablo Millán), in Switzerland (Buchner Bründler Architekten and Pictet-Broillet), in Portugal (Correia- Ragazzi), in Italy (Bricolo-Falsarella). «Casabella» 963 reserves particular attention to two interventions of reuse of railway buildings, symptomatically similar as they both aim to meet the needs of the economic exploitation of the contemporary cult for enogastronomy, although they have been realised in cities that are at the antipodes, one in Sydney by Sissons Architects and the other in Porto by Eduardo Souto de Moura. In the last pages of «Casabella» 963 Massimo Curzi presents three archives recently arranged in Italy by Luca Cipelletti, Formafantasma and ITS Arcademy, as he too is convinced that it is difficult to think about heritage if one does not consider the places that, in a broad sense, should foster respect for it.[-]

En Europe également, les conditions économiques et les choix politiques remettent en cause les dispositifs mis en place pour favoriser le bien-être. Il s'agit notamment des programmes de logements sociaux, le terme "logement" étant pris au sens large. Néanmoins, le logement reste l'un des thèmes que les architectes devraient aborder avec plus d'ardeur.

Le numéro 958 de "Casabella" le rappelle en examinant trois bâtiments récemment achevés à Londres, Zurich et Barcelone par Witherford Watson Mann, Lütjens Padmanabhan et Harquitectes, qui suggèrent que ce domaine de recherche peut être abordé sous différentes perspectives, ce qui se traduit par différentes directions de recherche. Les pages centrales de "Casabella" 958 présentent un nouveau musée, l'Archiv der Avantgarden - Egidio Marzona, construit à Dresde par Nieto Sobejano, qui encadre ce travail récent entre sept autres bâtiments muséaux que l'entreprise a réalisés au cours de sa carrière, caractérisés de manière inégalée.

La grande partie finale de "Casabella" 958 accueille quatre constructions surprenantes et originales de Christian Kerez qui ont pour but d'offrir au centre de Muharraq à Bahreïn un système de parking, organisé en quatre bâtiments construits à l'intérieur du tissu consolidé de l'agglomération. Tous les quatre misent sur la superposition de plans diversement courbés qui effacent toute différenciation fonctionnelle et se traduisent par une véritable augmentation du déploiement du porte-à-faux. Compte tenu de l'originalité des résultats obtenus, "Casabella" constitue une documentation détaillée du processus de conception qui a abouti à une idée constructive aussi singulière que surprenante, développée par Kerez pour l'occasion et traduite dans la réalité.[-]

Le thème de « Casabella » 957 est la juxtaposition de deux époques à la fois proches et différentes. Les premières pages présentent trois bâtiments conçus pour offrir des espaces spécifiques à des fonctions qui ne sont qu'apparemment diverses. La logique qui préside à la construction de ce numéro a poussé « Casabella » à faire précéder les images qui les représentent d'une photographie du Silo à sel de Solsire construit par Eladio Dieste à Montevideo, de 1992 à 1994 : des voûtes à double courbure d'une portée de 28,5 mètres et d'une hauteur de 13 couvrent un espace non segmenté d'une longueur de 108 mètres. Ce travail de Dieste a été réalisé à une époque où le logiciel AutoCAD était à peine mentionné. Il est difficile d'imaginer que des projets tels que ceux examinés dans « Casabella » 957, conçus par Experience, Felgendreher Olfs Köchling et Karamuk Kuo, trois vastes conteneurs partageant le fait d'être des « vides » comme les définit Michel Carlana, aient pu être conçus sans l'aide des technologies utilisées aujourd'hui par la plupart des bureaux d'études contemporains.


Les méthodes de travail des architectes de notre époque sont totalement différentes de celles qui ont permis la formation de la tradition qui leur est la plus proche. C'est pourquoi « Casabella » 957 explore un épisode qui n'est pas universellement connu, à savoir le travail mené par l'architecte danois Kay Fisker du début du XXe siècle aux années 1960, en abordant des thèmes de la vie contemporaine et en créant des œuvres telles que le Pavillon danois à l'Expo de Paris de 1925, l'Université d'Aarhus et l'Académie danoise de Rome. En plus de 70 pages de « Casabella » 957, Luca Ortelli a rassemblé des dessins, des photographies et des informations pour familiariser nos lecteurs avec la carrière de Fisker, dont les œuvres représentent une base de comparaison instructive avec ce qui se fait dans les cabinets d'architecture « sans papier » de notre époque.[-]

"Casabella 956, avril 2024, est un numéro monographique, Why Theatre Architecture, conçu par Francesca Serrazanetti, consacré à un sujet, l'espace théâtral, auquel la revue a accordé beaucoup d'attention au fil des ans. Comment ce thème est-il abordé aujourd'hui, alors que l'hostilité que Tadeusz Kantor, l'un des expérimentateurs théâtraux les plus originaux du XXe siècle, exprimait à l'égard de « l'espace théâtral » en l'opposant aux « machines d'annihilation » qu'il construisait, et que Peter Brook identifiait « les greniers, les granges et les arrière-boutiques » comme les lieux les plus appropriés pour les représentations théâtrales, sont devenus les prémisses de toutes les expérimentations contemporaines ? Ces sujets sont traités dans les écrits de Max Herrmann, Antonin Artaud, Peter Brook, Josef Svoboda, Tadeusz Kantor rassemblés dans « Casabella » 956.

Un essai de Francesco Dal Co sur la salle de concert construite entre 1925 et 1932 par Sven Markelius à Helsingborg complète « Casabella » 956.[-]

From 1954 to 1958 Dimitris Pikionis built one of the most beautiful, noble and cultured works in the history of contemporary architecture, the pathways and visit locations around the Acropolis in Athens. The meaning of this operation is explained in «Casabella» 945 by Alberto Ferlenga, while Francesco Dal Co criticizes the way the achievement of Pikionis is now being systematically ignored by the pervasive restoration initiatives presently in progress on the Acropolis, which will definitively disrupt one of the greatest expressions of universal culture. Due to the space required for the coverage of this theme and the hundreds of illustration involved, «Casabella» 945 has an unusual number of pages (122), half of which are devoted to the results of the original policy applied in the metropolitan area of Mexico City, for the construction of community facilities designed by young architects, and several examples in Europe and Africa in the field of architecture for education. This is a set of experiences worth examining in a moment when the need to rethink and bolster policies of welfare becomes increasingly urgent.

Reuse-refit-restore: to an increasing extent, this is the territory in which architects work. As demonstrated by the works examined in «Casabella» 944, with projects by Labics (Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara), Ignacio Laguillo Díaz (city hall at Fuentes de Andalucía), Corvino+Multari (Catanzaro courthouse), Instituto Pedra (Mariana Museum, Brazil).
Architects have always questioned the meaning that should be assigned to the enclosure. This is the theme of the second part of «Casabella» 944. Caruso St John (Swiss Life Arena, Zurich) and Smiljan Radic (temporary pavilion in Santiago, Chile) have approached this issue in a thought-provoking way. This is very different from the approach of a less well-known architect, Nelson Bayardo, for the construction (1959-61) of the columbarium of the cemetery of Montevideo, one of the most eloquent manifestations – overlooked to date – of how the global spread of Brutalist architecture has been the result of its capacity to adapt to various locations often considered peripheral, in banal terms, with their own cultural characteristics and experiences.

A queste pagine segue un'ampia antologia delle opere di Uno Tomoaki (10 di quelle costruite e una ricca documentazione riguardante i suoi dettagli costruttivi e i suoi arredi). Uno Tomoaki è uno dei più originali ed eclettici interpreti della cultura architettonica giapponese contemporanea, in particolare di quella come lui incline ad attribuire un valore preminente al culto per la semplificazione e alle tecniche costruttive tradizionali.

The design of a house can offer opportunities for experimentation in terms of construction techniques and language: this is the theme explored in «Casabella» 942 for the first part of the issue, covering projects that are very different from one another, by Studio Albori, Bricolo Falsarella and Jo Taillieu. This section is followed by an extensive anthology of the works of Uno Tomoaki (ten of his completed projects, with detailed documentation on construction details and furnishings). Uno Tomoaki is one of the most original and eclectic exponents of contemporary Japanese architectural culture, with its particular focus on the attribution of overriding value to the taste for simplification and use of traditional building techniques.

Le Creative Book, dont la structure éditoriale et le projet graphique avaient déjà été renouvelés lors de l'édition 2019, célèbre sa 11e édition. Il expose 23 œuvres déjà réalisées, sélectionnées parmi plus de 200 candidatures présentées lors de la XIIe édition du Grand Prix, auxquelles des prix et des mentions spéciales ont été attribués par un jury international. Les œuvres sont organisées dans les quatre catégories de référence prévues par le concours : centres commerciaux et directionnels, grandes surfaces ; bâtiments publics et de services, construction industrielle ; bâtiments résidentiels ; revêtements de façade, revêtements de sol pour l'extérieur, piscines.

Chaque projet est illustré par des photographies et des dessins et accompagné de textes descriptifs qui permettent d'approfondir l'utilisation des matériaux céramiques sélectionnés, ainsi que par une fiche technico-informative. En appendice, une brève biographie des concepteurs complète le volume. À travers ces exemples concrets, le Creative Book permet d'exposer les possibilités offertes par un matériau ancien mais susceptible d'être utilisé de façon tout à fait innovante tel que la céramique, aujourd'hui devenue à tous les effets « matière pour l'architecture ». Un lien que Casalgrande Padana s'est engagée à renforcer depuis longtemps.[-]
