Reuse-refit-restore: to an increasing extent, this is the territory in which architects work. As demonstrated by the works examined in «Casabella» 944, with projects by Labics (Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara), Ignacio Laguillo Díaz (city hall at Fuentes de Andalucía), Corvino+Multari (Catanzaro courthouse), Instituto Pedra (Mariana Museum, Brazil).
Architects have always questioned the meaning that should be assigned to the enclosure. This is the theme of the second part of «Casabella» 944. Caruso St John (Swiss Life Arena, Zurich) and Smiljan Radic (temporary pavilion in Santiago, Chile) have approached this issue in a thought-provoking way. This is very different from the approach of a less well-known architect, Nelson Bayardo, for the construction (1959-61) of the columbarium of the cemetery of Montevideo, one of the most eloquent manifestations – overlooked to date – of how the global spread of Brutalist architecture has been the result of its capacity to adapt to various locations often considered peripheral, in banal terms, with their own cultural characteristics and experiences.
