Nel 2014 lo studio belga di architettura Onkruid ha fondato il Festival Horst. Inizialmente questo si svolgeva nell'omonimo Castello a Holsbeek, ma da alcuni anni occupa una ex installazione militare, ASIAT, nei pressi di Bruxelles, ed è divenuto una infrastruttura culturale e uno spazio pubblico permanenti. Vi vengono realizzate installazioni artistiche e padiglioni per esibizioni ed esecuzioni musicali che continuano ad arricchirlo di spazi concepiti quali dimostrazioni della natura performativa dell'architettura, come lascia intendere Mattias Staelens, uno dei fondatori di Onkruit, nella conversazione avuta con Francesca Serrazanetti riprodotta nelle pagine di «Casabella» 975.

Ne sono dimostrazioni quanto hanno costruito per Horst gli architetti Piovenefabi (2024), Atelier Fanelsa (2025), Leopold Banchini & Giona Bierens de Haan+DVS1 (2025), i cui lavori sono pubblicati in questo numero della rivista.

Un'ulteriore sezione di «Casabella» 975 presenta tre maniere nelle quali un tema così diverso rispetto a quello di cui si sono occupati i progettisti coinvolti da Horst, ma così costantemente ricorrente nelle carriere di ciascun architetto come quello della costruzione di una abitazione privata, può essere affrontato rifiutando stereotipi formali e tentazioni autocelebrative. È il caso delle residenze costruite dagli studi BEAR in Spagna e Arquipélago + Mariana Caires in Brasile, da Lorenzo Guzzini in Italia.

Molte pagine di «Casabella» 975 sono dedicate all'opera di ristrutturazione del Museum Abby Kortrijk in Belgio di Barozzi Veiga con Tab Arquitects e alla costruzione del Calder Gardens a Philadelphia di Herzog & de Meuron con Piet Oudolf. Sono due esempi che confermano, qualora ve ne fosse bisogno, che i modi nei quali affrontano la configurazione di spazi pubblici è molto spesso la cartina di tornasole per giudicare i lavori degli architetti.

In 2014 the Belgian architectural practice Onkruid founded the Horst Festival. Initially held in the eponymous castle at Holsbeek, it has for some years occupied a former military installation, ASIAT, near Brussels, and has since become a permanent cultural infrastructure and public space. Artistic installations and pavilions for exhibitions and musical performances are created there, continuously enriching it with spaces conceived as demonstrations of the performative nature of architecture, as suggested by Mattias Staelens, one of Onkruid's founders, in the conversation with Francesca Serrazanetti reproduced in the pages of «Casabella» 975.

Evidence of this are the works built for Horst by Piovenefabi (2024), Atelier Fanelsa (2025), and Leopold Banchini & Giona Bierens de Haan + DVS1 (2025), whose projects are published in this issue of the magazine.

A further section of «Casabella» 975 presents three ways in which a theme so different from that addressed by the designers involved in Horst —yet so constantly recurring in the career of every architect, namely the construction of a private house— can be approached while rejecting formal stereotypes and self-celebratory temptations. This is the case with the residences built by BEAR in Spain and Arquipélago + Mariana Caires in Brazil, and by Lorenzo Guzzini in Italy.

Many pages of «Casabella» 975 are devoted to the transformation of the Museum Abby Kortrijk in Belgium by Barozzi Veiga with Tab Architects, and to the construction of the Calder Gardens in Philadelphia by Herzog & de Meuron with Piet Oudolf. These are two examples which confirm —if confirmation were ever needed— that the ways in which architects tackle the configuration of public spaces very often serve as the litmus test by which their work may be judged.
