The various aesthetic interpretations of recycling and reuse expressed through materials, objects, buildings, cities and the environment. A “state of the art” overview of an urgent contemporary issue, aimed at identifying possible future solutions and applications.
The exhibition is the result of an extensive research project launched in the autumn of 2010, which identifies “virtuous actions” in the fields of landscape and urban transformation, as well as experimental strategies for the “recycling” of the existing built heritage. The research was developed through projects, experiences and programmes with a distinctly experimental nature, inclined toward innovation also in terms of expression — a necessary condition for an institution like MAXXI, which is dedicated to contemporary architecture and art.
The exhibition is divided into two main sections.
The first is structured into four specific areas — landscape, city, housing, architecture — bringing together Italian and international projects, data and experiences.
The second gathers a range of works that reinforce the idea of creativity associated with the culture of recycling. In doing so, alongside an ethics of sustainability, it seeks to promote the emergence of an aesthetics of sustainability.
In parallel with the Re-cycle exhibition, a photographic section explores aspects connected to the main theme of the show through the work of contemporary Italian and international photographers. The various aesthetic interpretations of recycling and reuse, expressed through materials, objects, buildings, cities and the environment, define the “state of the art” of a pressing issue, offering clues to future solutions and applications.
Authors from diverse backgrounds and sensibilities are invited to reflect on the concept of recycling from unexpected — at times surprising — perspectives, including Aldo Bonomi, Enrico Ghezzi, Anthony Vidler and Sylvia Lavin.
