Craftsmanship in the Digital Age invited established manufacturers, proponents of newer digital production tools, architects, and building industry representatives, to co-articulate a craftsmanship approach for the incorporation of digital fabrication into architecture. Rather than seeing digital tools as incongruous with craftsmanship, Craftsmanship in the Digital Age posited that the second digital chapter in architecture design could in fact strengthen certain skills and principles characteristic of craftsmanship with benefits for architecture and manufacturing, including; more effective building materials and spatial typologies, a closer working relationship between architects and manufacturers, and an assertion of critical values for the building industry at this point in history, especially regarding energy and resource sustainability.

This book compiles the circa 40 participant responses into three core chapters on theory, practice, and outlook. Each chapter begins with short representative positions drawn from the keynote talks, and concludes with arguments extracted from discussions on the added value of digital fabrication, designing architecture in this second digital era, and digital building culture. The practice chapter contains 13 illustrated case study projects.

New conversations, like this one on digital fabrication, can provide fresh impetus to rethink the status quo. The Craftsmanship in the Digital Age series took the conversation out of the lab. This book aims to bring it into university design studios, onto the desks of architects, engineers and manufacturers, and onto the agendas of regulatory building industry bodies.
